Is 5G Technology the Wave of the Future?

The start of 2019 brings with it major anticipation for new tech. Smartphone lovers can’t wait for the latest mobile devices, and business owners look forward to smart solutions for improving productivity. Above all else, one topic seems to be on everyone’s mind: 5G technology. What is it, and does it live up to all the hype?

What Is 5G?

The term 5G – sometimes called 5G New Radio or 5G NR – refers to the next generation of mobile communications. Every time a new type of technology arises that causes a significant jump in capabilities, a new generation is born. In other words, 5G isn’t a simple upgrade from 4G or LTE, it’s a complete revolution that changes how wireless data transmissions function.

Unlike the mid-range spectrums commonly used for wireless internet, which are extremely saturated and result in slower connections in metropolitan areas, a 5G network takes advantage of extremely high radio frequencies in the range of 24–86 GHz that are almost entirely unused. This massive spectrum, referred to as mmWave, provides service providers with almost limitless amounts of bandwidth to dole out to users.

In order to deliver this enhanced performance, compatible devices need ultra-compact antennas. Wireless carriers also have to invest in additional types of infrastructure, called small cells, to overcome the smaller range and lower building penetration of high-range spectrums.

What Are the Advantages of Using a 5G Network?

While using high-range spectrums requires advanced technology to boost the limited signal range, the tradeoff is more than worth the cost due to extremely exciting benefits.

·         Significantly faster download speeds: High-spectrum frequencies allow communications of up to 10 Gbps. At that speed, users can download an entire HD movie in just a few seconds. In contrast, 4G LTE networks can theoretically only reach speeds of 2 Gbps maximum.
·         Sharply reduced latency: Compared to the LTE minimum latency of around 9 milliseconds, 5G provides far faster response times of a single millisecond. This allows for virtually instantaneous video streaming, online gaming applications and more.
·         Versatile coverage: The speed and reduced latency of 5G devices allows for exciting Wi-Fi applications never before possible, such as totally wireless home internet service. With the extensive bandwidth available, families and neighborhoods can access the internet simultaneously without slowdown issues, and there is no need to dig or install a landline.
·         Support for endless interconnected devices: Another game-changing aspect of a 5G network is the amount of devices that can operate at the same time. Experts predict an advanced network of smart sensors and automated systems able to communicate directly with each other in real time, from home appliances and driverless automobiles to health monitoring devices and heavy machinery.

What Can 5G Technology Do?

Maximum speed is a plus for pretty much everyone, but if your lifestyle prioritizes the following, you may want to upgrade to 5G tech as soon as it becomes available.

·         5G phones: An obvious application for 5G, and one of the most hotly awaited developments of the year, is the world of smartphones. Several manufacturers, such as Samsung, Sony and Huawei, are preparing to launch 5G phones during 2019, and other developers are playing their cards a little closer to their chests.
·         4K video streaming: While 4G LTE is capable of comfortably streaming HD video on mobile devices, 5G offers four times the resolution for pristine 4K Ultra HD.
·         Onboard entertainment for multiple devices: Imagine how smooth road trips will be when each of your children can stream their own movies, video games or applications, all at the same time.
·         Wireless gaming: Latency is a constant problem for gamers who love MMORPGs, FPS and MOBA-style video games. Smoother graphics, seamless boss battles with friends and faster response time in arenas are just some of the reasons to love 5G.
·         Live monitoring of home security: Modern tech can help working moms and dads keep an eye on their kids at home with high-resolution streaming from the office, grocery store or on the road.

Will 5G Be Available Everywhere?

Mobile carriers continue to set up their 5G network in specific areas around the country, concentrating primarily in larger cities and then expanding outward. Current projections point toward complete 5G NR network integration at some time in 2020. Soon travelers will be able to enjoy smooth wireless capabilities virtually anywhere, whether cruising around the city or heading to Tokyo on a business trip.

What’s not clear yet is whether wireless carriers will invest in 5G infrastructure in rural areas and near major highways, or opt to upgrade 4G LTE technology for these areas instead. The decision likely depends on the cost-effectiveness of coverage. In the meantime, any 5G-compatible mobile devices released continue to work with 4G LTE networks, so staying connected isn’t a problem.
